The association between H63D mutations in HFE and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in a Dutch population.
BACKGROUND Mutations in HFE, a gene defect that can disrupt iron metabolism, have been implicated in increasing the risk of developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). OBJECTIVE To further establish the association between ALS and HFE mutations by investigating whether HFE mutations are associated with an increased risk of developing ALS in a population in The Netherlands and by pooling o...
متن کاملAmyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in a Patient with Behçet’s Disease
Behçet’s disease is a multisystem vasculitis. Its neurological involvement mostly includes parenchymal and non-parenchymal central nervous system manifestations. Peripheral nervous system presentations are rare. A 32-yr-old male patient who fulfilled the international study group criteria for Behçet’s disease, referred to our center with walking difficulty and repeated falling downs. Neurologi...
متن کاملAncestral association between HLA and HFE H63D and C282Y gene mutations from northwest Colombia
A significant association between HFE gene mutations and the HLA-A*03-B*07 and HLA-A*29-B*44 haplotypes has been reported in the Spanish population. It has been proposed that these mutations are probably connected with Celtic and North African ancestry, respectively. We aimed to find the possible ancestral association between HLA alleles and haplotypes associated with the HFE gene (C282Y and H6...
متن کاملAssociation between Alzheimer disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
We report two cases of Alzheimer disease (AD)--one of them familial--in which the patient also had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and one patient with familial AD who had a son with ALS. Three further cases of probable ALS were found in pedigrees of AD reported from the literature. It is proposed that this association is not coincidental, but may suggest an etiological factor in common.
متن کاملGenetic Association between Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Cancer
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. An ALS drug, Riluzole, has been shown to induce two different anticancer effects on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In light of this finding, we explore the relationship between ALS and cancer, especially for HCC, from the molecular biological viewpoint. We establish biomarkers that can discriminate between ALS patients a...
